Acidosis is the widespread scourge that ruins health and shortens lives. It is defined as excessive blood acidity caused by an overabundance of acid in the blood, or a loss of bicarbonate from the blood (metabolic acidosis), or by a buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood that ensues from poor lung function or slow breathing (respiratory acidosis).

All modern diets, and even vegetarian, vegan, and raw food diets, when eaten incorrectly cause chronic (or “low-grade”) acidosis. More specifically, the two major causes of acidosis are:

1. Diets which are comprised mainly of acid-forming (acidifying) foods, and

2. The fermentation of starches and putrefaction of proteins in the stomach caused by eating incompatible food combinations and indigestible foods, resulting in acid waste poisoning, a degenerative condition that, sadly, most people endure every day of their declining lives.

The results of acidosis are: irritation, inflammation (including colitis and Crohn’s disease), enervation, malnutrition, loss, of alkaline mineral reserves, depletion of enzymes, degenerative diseases related to poor-quality body tissues such as osteoporosis and fractures and weak body tissue, and many other disease conditions which cause great suffering and early death.

What is an Acid-forming Food?

Foods are determined to be acidifying/acid-forming or alkalizing/alkaline-forming on the basis of their metabolic end reaction in our body.  That means after the nutrients from a food are utilized in the cells the resulting waste fluid pH is either acidic or alkaline. This is a function of each food’s mineral composition.

Certain minerals create acidity in aqueous solution; others create alkalinity. Foods with predominantly acid-forming minerals impart acidity to the cells and metabolic waste stream.  Foods with predominantly alkaline-forming minerals impart alkalinity to the cells and metabolic waste stream. The primary acid-forming minerals are: phosphorus, sulfur, chlorine, iodine, bromine, fluorine, copper and silicon.

The primary commonly-eaten acid-forming foods, drinks and items are: all animal meats, most grains and their products (wheat, rice, oats, rye, bread, pastas, cakes, crackers, etc.), legumes (beans, tofu, lentils, peanuts), dairy (milk, cream, cheese, butter, eggs), snacks (candies, chips, chocolates, pretzels, etc.), carbonated soft drinks/sodas, alcoholic beverages, coffee, protein powders, and most nuts and seeds.

Blueberries, cranberries, plums and prunes are the only acid-forming fruits.

No vegetables, squashes or potatoes are acid-forming.

All nuts and seeds are acid-forming, with this possible exception: almonds.

Chronic, excessive eating of acid-forming foods as well as poor food combining practices over-stress the body, forcing it to use its alkaline mineral reserves (mainly calcium) to buffer the acidity to keep us functioning. This depletes our alkaline mineral reserves, leading to many debilitating degenerative diseases, including inflammatory bowel diseases.

How to Achieve Acid-Alkaline Balance
Acid-alkaline balance is the regulation process the body conducts to maintain proper physiological functioning.  The process maintains bodily pH within certain limits. Bodily pHs are influenced by diet, exercise, emotions and environmental influences. Our average bodily fluids pH need to be slightly alkaline. The most critical acid-base balance process is the body’s need to maintain the blood pH around 7.4. The lungs, kidneys and chemical buffering systems play key roles in maintaining proper acid-alkaline balance. Exercise is an important regulator, too.

The A-A-A Diet TM (Acid Alkaline Association Diet) easily maintains our optimum alkaline state, and it reverses the effects of acidosis. It is comprised of 90% alkalizing and 10% acidifying plant foods, eaten in proper combinations, with 80% of the calories derived from carbohydrates, 10% from protein and 10% from fat.
