Treat Your Villi Very Gently!

Your small intestine is not at all like a rugged garden hose which can handle any and all abuse; it’s certainly not coated with Teflon! It’s a very intricate organ made of delicate flesh.

The the inner surface of the small intestine is lined with specialized structures called “villi” (pronounced “vil-eye”). Villi are small, finger-like projections that protrude from the epithelial lining of the small intestine’s inner walls. The villi are set in a striated pattern (like the bristles of a hair brush) to provide a great absorptive surface area for the enormous quantity of molecular nutrients which transit along the approximately 20-foot length of the small intestine.

The absorption of nutrients is facilitated by enterocyte digestive enzyme which is secreted from each villi. The villi absorb fatty acids, amino acids and simple sugars through their semi-permeable membranes into capillaries for delivery to the rest of the body through the lymph fluid. To enable the diffusion of nutrients into the bloodstream, the villi have a rich blood supply to maintain a concentration gradient across the membranes.

FRAGILE: Treat With Utmost Care!

The walls of villi are remarkably thin, about one cell thick, and are therefore very delicate and fragile. Each villus is approximately 0.5 to 1.6 mm in length and has many projecting microvilli which collectively form the brush border membrane. When abused by unnatural dietary, recreational and remedial practices, the villi are easily damaged and their function can be impaired or fully destroyed. This typically causes pain and leads to a myriad of disease conditions.

In consideration of the facts that

  • the villi are extremely delicate,
  • the small intestine is only about one inch in diameter,
  • the small intestine is packed into the abdominal cavity with numerous loops and bends, and
  • the muscles of the small intestine do not have unlimited energy available to move digesta toward the colon,

it should be obvious that the small intestine will function best on a diet of soft, water-rich foods.

Analogously, it’s much easier to pump juice through a hose than it is to pump thick, sticky mud with solid chunks of plants. Right?

So, you must have guessed it by now: the most suitable foods for the small intestines are ripe, raw, juicy organic fruits and, therefore, fruit should comprise the bulk of our diet! Biologically, anatomically and physiologically, humans truly are a species of frugivores!

Dietary Transgressions and Intestinal Damage

When we stray from a water-rich diet of soft foods (mainly juicy fruits and tender vegetables which are chewed well), we stress the small intestines and the entire bowel, and the consequences will typically be disastrous. I know! As a result of the omnivorous diet I ate as child and teenager, I had ulcerative colitis for eight hellacious years. But, I healed that for good 32 years ago via a fruit-based, mostly raw and fully vegan diet.

Ulcerative Colitis Healed in Two Weeks

“Ulcerative colitis? What is that?” I’d never heard of it. We are a very healthy family, or so I thought. I couldn’t believe this was the diagnosis of my then, 14 year old daughter. We were informed by her Pediatric GI that she had a chronic illness in her colon and would most likely be on medication the rest of her life. A young athlete, now had to be on medication the rest of her life? She started out with Lialda, then Canassa, and because the bleeding and loose stools were getting worse along with several bowel movements a day, not to mention cramping and pain, we had no choice but to do the medication. Soon she was moved up to steroids. What about diet? Low fiber low residue foods, example: cream of wheat otherwise known as wall paper paste! Nothing worked for three months and she was getting anemic. 40 mg a day of prednisone.

This went on for a few weeks and I thought that was going to be the quick fix. No! Doctor wanted to increase to 60 or admit to the hospital for IV steroids and monitor my daughter so the bleeding would stop. There had to be something else. I could not believe that food was not a part of all this as I was being told it was not. I spent quite a bit of time researching and fortunately, found Dr. Klein and his book, Self Healing Colitis & Crohn’s. After a long deliberation at home, our family agreed we would seek his services and have him counsel our daughter.

Thirteen days after she started the Vegan Healing Diet Plan, there was no more bleeding, her stools were starting to look normal and her body was healing. We did the “happy dance.” Because her physician was not supportive of this diet, we had to seek an outside GI to advise us on the tapering of the prednisone.

Today, our daughter, 15 is a happy healed champ swimmer and continues to thrive as a young teen, student and athlete. She eats only plant based and follows the principles of Dr. Klein’s Vegan Healing Diet Plan. The choice was simple: medications and eat whatever you want or eat what is nutritious for your body and live a drug-free life. The latter of course, it’s a no brainer. Our whole family, including myself, husband and son are healthier for it, as I have implemented a healthier lifestyle for all of us.

Thirty-one years ago, after eight horrific years of ulcerative colitis which left my body depleted and my life in ruins, a gastroenterologist in Manhattan said I’d get colon cancer within a few years, so I should consider 1. taking 6MP, the first immunosuppressant drug being tried on colitis patients, or 2. have my colon cut out and have a j-pouch constructed from my small intestine and sewed onto my anus, which came with the risk of the stitches ripping out.

I had arrived at the climax point.

I had heard nothing useful and many things lame and infuriating from seven gastroenterologists from New Jersey to New York City to Boston over those eight years. They all said that my Standard American Diet was not a factor in my colon disease.

Many months earlier, I had also heard the incredible words of a confident Doctor of Natural Hygiene who said that my disease was the result of toxemia, and my body would heal itself if I stopped poisoning it and started nourishing it properly, the natural way.

After major heavy thinking on the way home from that Manhattan medical office, my mind snapped!

I decided that I’d finally had enough of medical madness and I’d either rather die in my bed with no more medical meddling or somehow find the guts to begin a diet of nothing but fruits, vegetables, sweet potatoes and squash.

A few days later while contemplating my fate, everything in my mind came clear and my world changed. I blew up my old destructive life and began a new naturally healthful one! Thirty-one years ago, after an eight-year tragedy with ulcerative colitis, I saw the light and healed up my bloody ulcerated colon in four short weeks, after a gastroenterologist said it must be removed. My new life began with an explosion of joy which has not yet waned, and an indomitable passion to educate everyone else about healing.

The basis of my amazing healing and rejuvenation was Natural Hygiene (healthful living, or life science) education. The keys were:

1. The revelation that my body is designed to eat a vegan diet of mainly fruits and vegetables, and that diet would enable my body to detoxify the poisons that caused the inflammatory disease, and supply it with the nutrients needed to heal and generate my colon, and build superior health.

2. The understanding that my meat-based diet was the primary cause of my gut disease. I understood that cooked dead animal parts rot (putrefy) in my bowels, generating a host of virulent toxins and imparting destructive acidity. This enervates the bowel, poisons the bloodstream and causes systemic toxicosis, inflammation and gut dysfunction. In short, meat CAUSED my inflammatory bowel disease, so I STOPPED THE CAUSE.

3. I envisioned my bowels and tissues cleaning out the putrid morbid wastes of my toxic diet and becoming pure, and my entire being becoming healed and happy with nothing but pure digested, harmless fruits and vegetables in my bowel, and my bloodstream pure.

4. I understood that an enormous amount of energy would be liberated for my body to heal and rebuild an all-new clean body, no longer constantly burdened by a huge toxic load which affected my brain chemistry and made me miserable.

5. I saw the path to vibrant health and happiness, and during the four weeks of my healing, day by day I felt better and better, happier and happier, and finally overjoyed with my new healthful life anchored by the most naturally delicious and liberating foods on God’s Earth.

That amazing process of rejuvenation began at age 26. Before day one, I felt like I was 126. Now, at age 57, I feel something like 27. And I LOVE every bit of my raw-vegan fruit-vegetable-nut-seed diet! Our taste buds are corrupted by other diets; once you get into it, this one is the MOST delicious and satisfying of them all.

I do not miss meat! It made me tired, sluggish, smelly, toxic, sick, miserable and lost. I stopped eating meat one day 31 years ago and I would never go back to the killer of my dreams, my life, my happiness.

If an animal is slaughtered, it is not going to end up rotting in my body—my temple of health. If an animal dies, it should return to the soil. If an animal is boiled, roasted, barbecued, microwaved or fried, it is at least 100 times more indigestible and toxic than before, and it will poison the body and cause any of hundreds of disease conditions, or really just the one that covers them all: toxicosis. When anyone eats any kind of animal, they are poisoning their body, and setting up disease and suffering. They are also mindlessly contributing to the paradigm of killing and disrespect for all of life, which is the ugliest of all human traits, and the one which is the reason why men have been constantly warring since ancient times.

My body makes its own flesh, it’s own protein, blood and bones, from fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. They all furnish the building block of protein: amino acids. The body makes ALL of its protein from amino acids. It doesn’t need dead animal parts to do this. Cooking actually destroys animal protein, rendering it unusable by the body.

Fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are my diet. Meat is not food for me, and, really, meat is not a true healthful food for any human being. Fruit is my primary food. It keeps me clean, energized, youthful, keen, inspired and happy. Nothing tastes better than sweet, luscious fruit!

When I want something fatty, small amounts of avocado, nuts and germinated seeds do it for me, with far far better results than meat. You can say that avocados, nuts and seeds are my new “meats.” But I anchor my diet with luscious fruits, because nothing satisfies the body and soul better. My protein level and strength are just fine.

Humans are frugivores (fruit eaters). Our naturally most healthful diet is the fruitarian diet: fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Our most healing diet is sweet fruits. Humans will only thrive eating our natural diet, the one which digests perfectly and imparts no toxicity. Everyone can do this and thrive like never before.

Gastroenterologists know NOTHING about health! They can’t help you regain your health—they think that’s impossible. They are waiting for a miracle drug or a genetic re-programing fix to come along. That’s totally illogical fantasy. Except for life-threatening crises, there is NO good reason to go to a gastroenterologist!

I know. I went to seven gastroenterologists when I was ill with ulcerative colitis. I did not need to see any of them, but I was in the dark and new no better. Each gave me the same old ignorant spiel: “We don’t know what causes inflammatory bowel disease. Diet has nothing to do with it. You must take drugs and hope they’ll work, and if they don’t, surgery is the next option to avoid cancer.”

Dumb! Deflating! Disempowering! Ruinous! Inhumane! Cruel!

They are comfortable with their “I know these drugs are harmful, but I don’t know what else to do, so you must take them” mentality. They don’t even correlate diet with bowel health!

Abominable! Unconscionable! Shameful! Failures!

Meanwhile, millions of people are duped and suffer on and on, their lives wreaked by medical propaganda and ignorance.

We do not get healthy by treating the body with medicines. Medicines do not in any way enable one cell in the body to heal. Medicines poison the body and interfere with healing. The body doesn’t need medicine to heal. In fact, the body tries its best to get rid of medicines.

The body wants us to stop poisoning it with toxic diets and habits and drugs, and to implement our natural biological diet and allow healing on the body’s own terms.

If you are sick and want to be healthy, talk to a health doctor who knows how to restore health. Do not talk to a disease treatment doctor. Health restoration is the goal!

The symptoms of all inflammatory bowel diseases are signs that the body is TOXIC and urgently trying to HEAL itself. The body will do just that when we REMOVE the toxic, enervating CAUSES of disease and implement the conditions for healing and health rejuvenation. Food combining is the selection, preparation and consumption of foods which are compatible with our digestive physiology for our meals; this greatly enhances our digestion and promotes optimum health. Everyone soon benefits from this simple practice.

Why Practice Food Combining?

We need to practice proper food combining because constitutionally we are not omnivores. We are designed to eat simple meals of primarily one kind of food at a time which is suited to our fruitarian constitution, as we would procure in nature. While mono meals (one type of food per meal) yield the best results, simple meals of 2 or 3 different compatible foods also work well.

We have digestive limitations–we cannot completely digest haphazard and complex food combinations, as evidenced by indigestion, flatulence, acid reflux, diarrhea, vomiting, irritable bowel, body odors, colds, flu, pimples, dandruff, chronic pain, fatigue, earaches, colds, sore throats, fevers and countless other signs of toxemia. This is because meals of improperly combined foods limit or negate digestion–the foods will decompose or rot in the gut, poisoning us and potentially leading to irritable bowel, colitis, Crohn’s disease, GERD and many other gastrointestinal diseases.

If we have chronic gastrointestinal gas, queasiness, bloating and body odors we are not healthy, even if we feel “fine” in some ways. Toxic matter and gases in the body erode our health, sooner or later leading to disease and suffering. Those who can seemingly eat “anything” are, ultimately, not going to get away with it. In fact, hygienic physiologists agree that over ninety percent of all known common maladies and major diseases are caused by autointoxication, i.e., self-poisoning, mainly from eating diets which are incompatible with our physiological constitution and systemic capabilities. The old Chinese saying holds true: “Disease enters through the mouth.”

The practice of food combining is supported by overwhelming scientific evidence. During the United States Civil War era a medical doctor named Beaumont performed many clinical tests on a man who, by virtue of an unusual injury, had a temporary hole extending to the exterior of his abdomen which afforded direct sampling of his stomach contents under various eating conditions. Those observations were used subsequently by 19th century physiologists Dr. John H. Tilden and Dr. Herbert M. Shelton in the formulation of food combining guidelines. Dr. Shelton’s classic, “Food Combining Made Easy,” has helped millions. Furthermore, food combining instructions date back to ancient times, as revealed by Kosher dietary laws and ancient yogic texts.

The Physiology of Digestion

Specific digestive enzymes are required to digest specific food components, i.e., to split certain molecules into assimilable and usable components. Herewith are the physiological basics of digestion with regard to food combining.

Starch digestion begins in the mouth. Salivary amylase enzymes/juices are secreted when we chew starchy foods. Therefore, we must chew starchy food well, mixing our saliva with the food (the process known as “insalivation”). Our salivary enzymes are highly alkaline and their functionality is weakened when mixed with acids. When alkaline and acid enzymes are mixed the pHs cancel out and digestion is impaired. Therefore, we must not consume acid fruits with starchy foods.

Strong acidic digestive enzymes (hydrochloric acid and pepsin) are secreted in the stomach when we eat high-protein foods (e.g., nuts, seeds and avocado). If we eat starchy foods with high-protein foods, the alkaline salivary enzymes will mix with the acidic stomach enzymes in the stomach, curtailing digestion, causing the starches to ferment and proteins to putrefy in the gut. Thus, it is obvious that nuts and white potatoes or grains cannot digest well together. This also applies to the conventional combinations of meat with potatoes, pasta with meatballs, pizza with cheese and meat, hamburgers and hot dogs on buns, meat and bread sandwiches with mayonnaise and butter, cereal with milk, and rice with tofu or beans.

Fruits are predigested by the ripening action of the sun and their enzymes. As such, they require little digestion in the body. Their nutrients need to be absorbed into the bloodstream within 10 to 60 minutes–otherwise, the sugars will warm up and ferment. The denser, bulkier fruits which have a bit of fat, such as bananas, require the longest detention time in the stomach–about an hour. There they are mixed with a small amount of bodily water and gradually released into the small intestine. Fruits digest best by themselves or with “neutral” green vegetables. The “neutral” vegetables (such as celery, lettuce and kale) are so called because their starch, protein and fat content is low and, thus, their digestion will not interfere with the digestion of fruit. In fact, the inclusion of greens with fruit meals generally aids digestion by virtue of their fiber and complimentary nutrient content. Energetically, greens with fruit is known to have a balancing effect.

The fat in fatty foods (most of which are also high in protein) is primarily digested in the upper part of the small intestine. Fat is emulsified (broken down into small, assimilable droplets) by the strong alkaline enzymes in bile. Bile is made in the liver, sent to the gallbladder and secreted into the duodenum. When large complex meals are eaten, the food will be held up in the stomach for many hours and the fat will likely become rancid and rendered unusable before it can be acted upon by bile.

The complete digestion of starch, protein and fat requires time–approximately 1 to 2 hours for raw food meals and several hours longer for cooked foods. The digestion of these nutrients also requires full-strength enzymatic action. If starchy and fatty high-protein foods are ingested with water, beverages and watery fruit, the additional liquid content will dilute the concentration of the digestive enzymes, reducing their effectiveness.

If sweet, non-acid fruit is eaten with large portions of starchy and/or fatty high-protein foods, they will be detained for more than an hour in the stomach and will transit more slowly through the bowel. Their sugars will warm up and ferment, potentially causing all sorts of problems, including irritable bowel, candida albicans overgrowth, gassiness, diarrhea, vomiting and brain fog. Furthermore, simultaneous high concentrations of sugar and fat in the bloodstream causes problems with blood sugar metabolism, such as diabetes.

If small portions of starchy and/or fatty high-protein foods are eaten with large portions of sweet fruits or juices, this hinders the body’s ability to sense the presence of the starch, protein and fat. The digestive enzymes they require may not be secreted, and fermentation and putrefaction will likely occur. As an example, nuts/seeds/butters/avocado added to sweet, non-acid fruit smoothies will not be digested.
The combining of minimal amounts of acid fruits with fatty-protein foods (such as in a salad dressing) tends to digest well for some people because the acids in the fruits aid in the breaking down of protein molecules.

Test It Yourself and You’ll Quickly Know

The validity of the food combining guidelines (or “rules”) has been readily confirmed by everyone who has diligently applied them. A properly combined, alkalizing, low-fat, vegan diet of 75 percent or more raw, vegan foods will clear up most digestive maladies in short order.

In my own case, after 8 horrific years of ulcerative colitis my g.i. system quieted down within 24 hours of adopting a fruit-based vegan diet and applying food combining protocol. I felt wonderfully well and healing was rapid. Previously, during my long siege of ulcerative colitis, my g.i. system had been a virtual erupting volcano when eating. Countless others have experienced similar relief of their g.i. ills. Everyone who adheres to these guidelines, avoiding overeating and incorporating other essential elements of healthful living, sooner or later derives the benefits of excellent digestion, absence of body odors, minimal or no gas, inoffensive feces, effortless defecation, clear urine, clearer skin, eyes and mind, more balanced composure, ideal weight level, greater physical stamina, faster healing, better sleep and youthful vitality.

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in May, 2000. My problems started a few years before this when I mistreated my body by not eating well while under quite a lot of stress. I remember when I was at university and had to attend lectures being unable to sit in a class for even five minutes because I was going to the toilet more and more each day. I found it very embarrassing and I couldn’t explain what was happening. The funny thing now when I look back is that I now know where every single toilet is on the London Underground. The unknown fear of having accidents and not making it in time to a toilet was overwhelming. I saw several doctors about my constant need to go the toilet with bleeding and they told me to stop eating chilies! I did not stop.

In a very sick condition I went back home to my family and saw my family doctor. He prescribed anti-diarrhea medication which did absolutely nothing. The doctor then gave me daily blood tests which showed that my iron level was dropping at a very scary rate. I was admitted into hospital looking as white as a sheet and feeling lifeless and confused. After doing tests and after my first colonoscopy they told me I had ulcerative colitis. My entire large bowel was ulcerated and bleeding.

The first thing they gave me was a blood transfusion. The nurse spilled half of the bottle on the floor. Then followed intravenous steroids which caused me to want to eat nonstop. In the hospital I had my own private room which didn’t feel so daunting as I had a in-suite bathroom, but, nevertheless, I was going through hell. I stayed there about five weeks in total. I remember surgeons coming to chat to me about the possible consideration of removing my entire bowel. I couldn’t ever let them do that. Over time I was put on lots of drugs: prednisone, asacol and Aziathriopine Nothing was working! The consultant recommended surgery which frightened me, so I took new action.

I went home and I Googled “self-help / healing colitis.” Then I came across Dr. Klein’s http://www.colitis-crohns.com website. I marveled about how he healed himself and thought I had nothing to lose. I was sick and tired of feeling like this and wasn’t able to enjoy my food because of the pain. I ordered Dr. Klein’s book and started!

It was a shock to go from eating what I called a “normal diet.” I invested in a juicer and, implemented a mostly juice diet and starting eating fruit. I threw away my meds and believed this would work. I didn’t tell my consultant at all. Every time I went back to see him I was a little bit better. I had never done anything as challenging as this. I tried to follow the diet as best as I could.

After a year and a half I went back to see my medical consultant who thought I was taking the meds he had prescribed—I was not. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in April of 2011. I was immediately referred to gastroenterological care, but because I lacked medical insurance not a single gastroenterologist where I lived would take me on as a patient. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

I began reading books about my Crohn’s to self-treat as best I could. Typically, I came across three kinds of books on the topic. The first kind recommends getting on with standard modern medical treatments, which involve taking powerful dosages of antibiotics, immunosuppressants, and other drugs. They also recommend things like avoiding fibrous foods and other foods that might exacerbate the symptoms. The main person to seek help from here is a gastroenterologist, who is supposed to be the medical authority on intestinal diseases.

The second kind of book recommends alternative approaches to treating Crohn’s. They recommend different kinds of herbs, oils, supplements, probiotics and macrobiotic diets for people with Crohn’s to experiment with. Many of these books recommend seeing a naturopathic doctor.

The third approach I found was an integrative approach. What is really needed, it is claimed, is proper gastroenterological and naturopathic care, and whatever other care you might feel you need.  Human bodies are unique, they stated, and need to be experimented with, and one who has an intestinal disease cannot afford not to see medical professionals. Gastroenterologists and naturopathic doctors can work symbiotically to maximize proper treatments. One can take dosages of drugs that her gastroenterologist prescribes, and one can also take the herbs, oils, supplements, and probiotics that her naturopathic doctor recommends, etc.  

I dabbled for a week or so with some recommendations that I could get from my local health food store, but these made my symptoms worsen. I did not want to go the modern medical route, and could not anyway due to my lack of medical insurance. Accordingly, the integrative approach seemed hopeless.  

One night I went online to see if there were more books I could check out.  I found Dr. Klein’s book, Self-Healing for Colitis and Crohn’s. As I began reading it I had a feeling that Dr. Klein was speaking truth. There was something about the presentation, the arguments, the Natural Hygiene philosophy that made so much intuitive sense and, perhaps more importantly, made me trust Dr. Klein’s teaching. He had been through severe ulcerative colitis himself, he reversed his condition, and, inspiringly, went on to find true health. This was important for me. He did not, as I had read in so many testimonials in other books, keep his condition in check for a while only to experience future flare-ups or go through what seemed to be the usual cycles of colitis. He was able to reverse his condition indefinitely.  And, the results were immediate.  

I followed Dr. Klein’s advice. Overnight, I became a low-fat, high carb (fruit!), raw vegan, following food combining principles and putting his teachings into practice. On the second day I was eating fruit without pain!  I hadn’t eaten without pain for months!  

Over time, I began to internalize his teachings, and after a month or so I jo longer felt pain in my ileum and the inflammation seemed to have run its natural healing course.  I was able to eat more and more fruit and some tender vegetables. Six months later, as I write this, my health has never been better. I am still following Dr. Klein’s principles and am not looking back!  I have found true health.

I would like to join the hundreds of people who have thanked you for helping me out with your great book, Self Healing Colitis & Crohns.  I had been diagnosed with light gastritis since 2006. Then, during the month of August of this year, I began experiencing an increasing bloating problem. It culminated in a bout of violent vomiting one night and a trip to the emergency room. The doctor, once he saw that I could keep down food, released me and told me to see a G.I. specialist. He wrote the diagnosis “colitis” on my release papers.

I was disappointed with that the G.I. doctor could not see me for four weeks. Suffering and in pain, I took a three-hour trip to San Luis, Rio Colorado, Mexico. The small-town doctor I saw was able to calm my symptoms and help me with some guidance. She put me on antibiotics, anti-diarrhea, lactobacillus acidophilus, and pain reliever pills. I went home thinking this regimen would work. I don’t believe it did.  Now, this is where you come in. 

I was searching online as best as I could, being that I was on the john ever hour for three days! I was so exhausted during those days. After reading pieces of your advice from your http://www.colitis-crohns.com website, I dropped the pills and ate only banana, and peeled apples and pears. The bloody stools went away in less that two days! By the fourth day,I was eating solid food with no symptoms of colitis. This was in view of my family who was against a pure fruit diet. 

During week two of the healing stage I had regained my strength. At the end of the week I had an appointment with my doctor in Mexico again to check my blood work and see how I was coming along. The colitis was gone!

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis when I was 20. I remember how crushed I felt when the doctor told me there’s no cure, that I need to be screened for cancer every year and that it would be likely that I would need surgery in the next 10 years. I tried several medications, but the side effects were so horrible that I decided I would just rather deal with the pain. There were so many days that I skipped eating just so I could avoid a bowel movement. It was disabling both physically and mentally.

At some point I was told that not eating animal products could ease the pain. This sparked my curiosity. I searched “vegan ulcerative colitis” on Google and came to Dr. David Klein’s website. I was very skeptical. It was contrary to everything the specialists told me. However, after one too many weeks of being in agony, I didn’t care anymore and was willing to try anything.
